Communication Skills

The importance of communication skills

Communication is the expression of ideas, thoughts and emotions.  It plays a predominant role in our everyday life.  Communication, which takes place in both verbal and non-verbal modes, involves the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Effective communicators try to master all the four skills and ensure successful communication.  They take care to express themselves in the right way at the right time.  They focus on both ‘what’ to communicate and ‘how’ to communicate.

This conscious approach towards communication keeps them ahead of others at workplaces and helps them build and maintain meaningful and lasting relationships. Thus, effective communication is a prerequisite for leading a successful life.

Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing contribute to ‘communication skills’.  Apart from these four skills, we use non-verbal modes of communication such as body language, gestures, posture, facial expression and eye contact during our communication.

One has to judiciously mix verbal and non-verbal modes to be an effective and interesting communicator.  Today one’s communication skill is the passport to one’s dream career.

Communication in the twenty-first century has crossed national boundaries for purposes of business, education, medicine etc., aided by electronic systems.  Technology is a boon to us in this context.  We undertake trips as tourists and students.  Migration has also become common.  Hence, it is imperative that we hone our communication skills to meet the demands of the modern age.

Communication takes place not only between individuals but also between countries for various purposes.  We are also aware that today organizations function and co-ordinate with one another at the global level especially during times of crises and in international issues.

The ‘communication revolution’ and its implications have been well-understood by individuals as well as organizations and countries.  This has ultimately transformed this world into a ‘global village’! Let’s make sure to contribute to this global village by being an effective communicator.
